Plated Sit-Down Dinner
A plated meal is the most traditional reception style and remains the top choice for many couples. Guests are seated and served a formal dinner, typically featuring two courses—an appetizer and an entrée—with dessert often served table-side. Everyone receives the same appetizer, while the main course can be handled in several ways:
- Uniform Entrée: All guests are served the same entrée, with a silent vegetarian or vegan alternative available.
- Menu Selection: Guests choose their entrée at the table from a menu that usually includes a meat or fish option and a vegetarian choice.
- Pre-Selected Entrée: Guests indicate their entrée preference when submitting their RSVP.
With a plated meal, our professional service team takes care of everything—taking orders, delivering courses, and clearing tables—so you and your guests can relax. This style sets a formal tone for your gathering and gives you the most control over the look and feel of the meal. You’ll work closely with us to bring your vision to life, ensuring a seamless and efficient dining experience that stays on schedule.
Family-Style Dinner
A family-style meal is just as it sounds—a warm, communal way to enjoy dinner, perfect for weddings, especially those with a more intimate guest list. With this style, everyone is seated as large platters and bowls of food are passed around each table, much like a meal at home with family. It’s an ideal choice if you want guests to remain seated but prefer a relaxed atmosphere over the formality of a plated dinner.
Typically, the first course features one or two options, while the main course can include a single protein with a couple of sides or multiple proteins and sides for greater variety.
- Variety and Flexibility: Guests can choose from a range of dishes, making it easier to accommodate different tastes and dietary needs.
- Casual and Welcoming: The atmosphere is laid-back and inviting, encouraging guests to relax and enjoy themselves.
- Community Building: Passing food around the table naturally sparks conversation and interaction among guests.
- Efficient Service: Unlike buffets or stations, everything arrives at the table at once, so everyone can help themselves without waiting in line.
Family-style dining offers a blend of comfort, convenience, and connection—making your wedding reception feel both special and personal.
Self-Serve Stations
Stations offer your guests a wonderful variety of food options, similar to buffets, but with a more interactive and personalized touch. Each station is dedicated to a specific dish or type of cuisine, often staffed by our team to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
This setup is a fantastic way to showcase your personalities as a couple. Love oysters? Set up an oyster shucking station. Craving pizza? Bring in a pizza oven for made-to-order pies. Cheese lovers can indulge with an impressive cheese bar.
- Visual Impact: Like buffets, stations create beautiful and photogenic displays that add to your event’s ambiance.
- Specialty Dishes: Attended stations are perfect for serving dishes that might be tricky for guests to handle themselves at a standard buffet.
- Guest Interaction: Chef-attended stations encourage guests to mingle, discuss their options, and enjoy a lively, communal dining experience.
Stations are a creative and memorable way to delight your guests and make your celebration truly unique.
Cocktail-Style Weddings Dinner
Break with tradition and consider a cocktail-style wedding reception for a lively and unforgettable experience. Start with a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres, then elevate the evening with customizable food stations—transforming your wedding dinner into the ultimate extended cocktail hour.
This approach solves common wedding planning challenges, such as seating arrangements for guests who might not fit at a single table. You and your guests are free to mingle, dance, and enjoy small bites—whether tray-passed or displayed on a stylish grazing table—throughout the night.
To ensure everyone feels included, offer a variety of options, including vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, and gluten-free choices.
- Unrestricted Movement: You can easily move around and connect with all your guests, something not always possible with a plated dinner.
- Interactive Atmosphere: A cocktail-style reception encourages guests to engage and interact throughout the event.
- Cost-Effective Solution: If you want to invite more guests but need to manage your budget, this style allows you to accommodate a larger crowd without the expense of a full sit-down meal
Buffet-Style Dinner
A buffet offers a long table filled with a diverse array of dishes you’ve selected for your wedding reception. This style provides guests with the most variety, making it ideal for those who enjoy multiple cuisines or have specific preferences.
- Guest Choice: Guests can choose exactly what—and how much—they want to eat.
- Visual Appeal: Well-designed buffets are vibrant and photogenic, especially when arranged by a skilled team.
- Efficiency: The key is to keep the lines moving smoothly so everyone can enjoy the spread without long waits

How long does a plated dinner take?
A three-course meal usually takes two hours to serve and be consumed. This can fluctuate depending on the amount of time required to serve, which is higher for larger guest lists. Servers will usually wait seven to ten minutes after a course has been finished to bring out the following course.
How many servers do I need for a plated dinner?
For a plated dinner, the general rule of thumb is to have one server for every 10 to 15 guests (or two tables). For buffet or food stations, one server for every 25 guests is recommended.
How do you notify guests of the meal style on wedding invitations?
Traditionally, plated dinners with entree or dessert options are the only ones that need to be highlighted on the wedding invitations. The information (and preference options) would go on the RSVP card. If you’re planning a cocktail-style dinner, we recommend noting this on the invitation with a simple “Cocktail reception to follow” so guests know to grab a bite beforehand.
How do I find out if guests have dietary requirements?
The RSVP card, or RSVP section of the wedding website, should leave a space for guests to note any dietary requirements they have.
